Granger Community Christian Church: A Faithful Legacy Rooted in Community
The Granger Community Christian Church began humbly in 1958, founded by Reverend Warren H. Sechler and a committed group of 47 charter members who dreamed of building a Protestant church to serve the west-side neighborhoods of Salt Lake County. For several years, the congregation worshipped at 2284 West 3500 South, where they formed a close-knit spiritual family. That original site is now part of the I-215 freeway, but its legacy lives on.
By 1962, the congregation had grown to over 120 members and was ready for a new chapter. On September 23, 1962, the beautiful new church building at 2600 West 3800 South was dedicated in a service filled with hope, music, and heartfelt reflection. Designed by M.E. Harris Jr., the church’s architecture reflected both functionality and grace. D'John De Young of Salt Lake City served as the contractor, ensuring quality workmanship for a house of worship that would serve the community for decades.
The dedication service was led by Reverend Howard Johnson, the church’s new pastor who had just relocated from Denver with his family. Reverend Sechler returned to deliver the dedicatory sermon, a poignant moment that bridged the congregation’s past with its promising future. Ministers from across the Salt Lake Valley and Ogden attended, along with members of the South Idaho Missionary Society, reaffirming the church’s mission and regional connection.
Over the years, Granger Community Christian Church became a beacon for worship, fellowship, and service. It hosted Bible studies, weddings, youth groups, and holiday celebrations that brought families together in faith. Though decades have passed, the spirit of those early members, their dreams, and their devotion continue to echo in the lives of all who remember.
It has been torn down several years ago the land was vacant for many years and now houses a large apartment complex.
