The Original Harmons Grocery – A Granger Treasure
The Original Harmons Grocery
Before Harmons became a household name across Utah, it was our neighborhood grocery store—the original store that stood proudly as a hub of everyday life in Granger. For those who grew up in the area, a trip to the Original Harmons wasn’t just about picking up groceries; it was a cherished experience, packed with little details that still live brightly in memory.
Russ W. recalls:
“The original Harmons was the best! I loved when my mom would let us go with her. I can remember so many details…”
There was the ramp you walked down as you entered the store, a gun department tucked off to the left, and the butcher shop toward the back where friendly staff would greet customers by name. And who could forget the colorful cloth flour sacks stacked high—purchased not just for baking, but because those patterned bags would later be transformed into pillowcases by creative moms?
“There was an electrical shack in the middle of the parking lot,” Russ adds, “and big domed ‘cameras’ with signs hanging from them that made you think twice about sneaking anything into your pocket!”
Even the uneven floors, as noted by Cindy T., were part of the charm—worn down by years of footsteps from loyal customers who filled the aisles day after day. It wasn’t fancy, but it was familiar, welcoming, and deeply woven into the rhythm of local life.
Harmons isn’t just a store—it was and still is a gathering place. A spot where kids could tag along with their parents, neighbors ran into each other in the aisles, and everyone knew the staff by name.
Though the original building is long gone, replaced after a fire, the memories of the Original building remain strong. The smells, the sounds, the colors—that feeling of being part of a small, connected community.
Today, Harmons has grown into a respected leader in Utah’s grocery scene, but those who remember the original store know: there was nothing quite like it.
