Miss Lois Spicer

Granger’s Brightest Star – Top of the County, 1903

Born April 2, 1887, in Salt Lake City to English immigrants Walter and Elizabeth Spicer, Lois Spicer moved as a child with her family to a large farm in Granger, Utah. There, amid the responsibilities of farm life, Lois developed a passion for learning that set her apart in the growing Granger/Hunter community.

A dedicated and gifted student, Lois attended the Fifty-ninth District School in Granger—her only school—and rose to become the top academic pupil in all of Salt Lake County in 1903.

In her final county examinations, Lois achieved near-perfect scores:

  • Grammar: 100

  • Reading: 94

  • Arithmetic: 92

  • History: 91

  • Geography: 92

  • Civil Government: 95

  • Spelling: 91

  • Writing: 85

  • Drawing: 84

  • General Average: Top Score in the County

Her success was widely celebrated and noted in county records and newspapers, earning her the title:

"Young Lady of Granger Who Made the Highest Average of Any Pupil in Salt Lake County Schools."

Lois also spoke publicly at school functions, including delivering a speech titled “Possibilities”, inspiring classmates and community alike.
