Riding Through History: The Billings Family and Plaza Cycle

Plaza Cycle and the Billings Family

In 1982, DeLyle and Arlene Billings purchased Plaza Cycle, a large and growing motorcycle dealership in West Valley City. Together with their sons, Chris and Kary, the family poured countless hours into the business. With nearly 50 employees, Plaza Cycle became a hub not only for motorcycles but also for friendships and loyal support from both staff and customers. Under the Billings’ leadership, the dealership grew to become one of the largest motorcycle dealerships in the country.

The family’s joy in working side by side was deeply shaken in 1998, when Chris Billings died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. His passing left a lasting mark, and the happiness once found in operating the dealership was greatly diminished. In 2000, after nearly two decades of ownership, the Billings family sold Plaza Cycle.

The Billings were known for their community spirit. They supported West Valley fairs, local events, and statewide projects, and were generous in sharing their success. Their impressive collection of vintage cars was a source of pride, and they gave freely to benefit others. In one remarkable gift, the family donated ten motorcycles and five CC engines to support education in Utah. The motorcycles ranged from small 3 cc automatics to powerful 1000 cc six-cylinder, 24-valve highway models.

Through Plaza Cycle, their community service, and their generosity, the Billings family left a lasting mark on both West Valley City and the state of Utah.

In 2025, DeLyle Billings was inducted into the Utah Hot Rod Hall of Fame, a fitting honor for a man whose life has been defined by a love of cars. A lifelong collector and restorer, DeLyle has always had an eye for the unusual and a willingness to take on challenging automotive projects. After selling Plaza Cycle, he established his own shop in West Valley City, where he continues to restore and build vehicles alongside his partner, Gordon Wissler. His collection reflects both variety and vision, ranging from a rare 1923 Dodge Screenside Delivery Truck, to a 1966 Plymouth Fury convertible, to a towering 1981 Suburban “Monster Truck” of his own creation. Yet, above them all, DeLyle and Arlene’s most cherished vehicle remains their beloved 1955 Ford Thunderbird, a symbol of both his craftsmanship and their shared journey togethe
