Frank Domichel – A Man of Many Hats: Mechanic, Restaurateur, Farmer, and Community Leader

Frank Domichel (1918–1995) was a lifelong resident of the Granger-Hunter area, later known as West Valley City, and a man deeply dedicated to his family, his land, and his community. The son of Anton Domichel, who purchased la farm at 3100 South and Redwood Road, Frank grew up with a strong work ethic and a love for the land.

Frank got approximately four acres of his father’s land on the east side of Redwood Road, from 3150 to 3210 South, alongside his wife, Ann, while raising their children and supporting their grandchildren. He was a Farmer 1st , businessman & community activist. Frank was a World War II veteran

He and his brothers also farmed 10 acres near 1300 West and 2100 South.

Frank was true businessman at heart. He and Ann owned several businesses along Redwood Road, including their home at 3197, Ann’s Café at 3201, and Frank’s Garage at 3199. For 18 years, Ann’s Café became a beloved local landmark, serving hearty meals and warm smiles, while Frank’s Garage kept the community’s cars running smoothly.

His passion for his community extended beyond his businesses. Frank was active in local politics, running for both City Council and Mayor of West Valley City. In his 1985 mayoral campaign, he spoke out for government accountability, saying, “Residents of West Valley City need someone who will get out of City Hall and meet the public… the public should be heard, since they are the ones paying the wages for City Hall employees.” He opposed unnecessary spending, including plans for a new city hall, advocating instead for funds to be used in more urgent community programs.

Frank’s life reflected his values—hard work, service, and love of country. He was a farmer, mechanic, restaurateur, and political advocate, but above all, he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose efforts helped shape the community he loved.
