Rudy Varoz and his Fruit/Vegi Stand
Rudy Varoz: A Friendly Face and a Fruit Stand Full of Flavor
Born in New Mexico, Rudy Varoz moved to Utah in 1942 as a young boy when his parents brought their four sons—Roman, Ross, Rudy, and Ray—to Murray in search of greater opportunity. Rudy quickly made his mark, becoming class president at Murray High School, where he also excelled on the track and football teams.
But what many in the valley remember most about Rudy wasn’t his athletic achievements—it was the fruit and vegetable stand he operated near KMART at 4100 South and Redwood Road. Friendly and always welcoming, Rudy offered some of the freshest, most delicious produce around, drawing loyal customers year after year. His stand became a favorite neighborhood stop—a place where people came not just for the food, but for the warm smile and kind conversation.
Rudy’s inlaw’’s Restaurant: Dryers, Smith’s Restaurant, and it became The Heather and Tuscany.
Rudy married Edythe Smith, whose family owned the well-loved Smith’s Restaurant at 2832 E 6200 South (which later became The Heather and is now the Tuscany Restaurant). The restaurant was known for its hearty meals and legendary warm chocolate cake that left lasting impressions on every guest.
Though Rudy’s stand is now gone—replaced by a six-story condo complex with several businesses—the memory of his down-to-earth charm and farm-fresh produce lives on in the hearts of those who knew him.
