Blueprint of a Life: Honoring Architect and Civic Leader J. Leonard Harman

Architect, Missionary, Civic Leader, Musician, Pilot

James Leonard Harman was born in 1928 to Leonard and Lucy Harman. From an early age, Leonard showed a passion for learning and design. He studied architecture at the University of Utah and later earned a degree in geology from BYU. After passing the architectural licensing exam, he became a registered architect in multiple states. His homes, businesses, and churches—many of which still stand today—reflect his exceptional sense of beauty, form, and function. Each of the homes, businesses & churches are unique and beautiful. One of his masterpieces is on 3500 south 4219 west.

Leonard married Bette Huggins in 1952. In 1970, the couple moved to Uruguay, where he served as an international architect for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He later returned in 1999 to help build the Montevideo Uruguay Temple. Leonard was still actively working on various projects at the time of his passing in 2010 at the age of 81.

Affectionately known as "The Flying Architect," Leonard was an avid pilot who combined his love for flight with his professional and ecclesiastical work. He served as a full-time missionary and held numerous leadership positions in the LDS Church, including bishop, stake presidency counselor, and high councilor.

Deeply committed to his community, Leonard served as president of both the Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce. He was also musically gifted, playing bass and saxophone in military bands and community singing groups.

Leonard enjoyed oil painting, construction, aviation, music, and—above all—spending time with his family. A proud Eagle Scout, he exemplified a life of service, creativity, and faith.

He passed away in 2010, in Marshall, Minnesota, with burial in the Yellow Medicine Lutheran Cemetery in Hanley Falls.

Leonard Harman, known affectionately as “The Flying Architect,” the structure showcases his signature flair—complete with bold lines and dramatic roof angles that set it apart from anything else in the area.
