Bud Hendrickson: Granger’s Horseman and Community Cowboy
Bud Hendrickson – A Life with Horses
Born in 1922 in Glenwood, Utah, not far from Richfield, Bud Hendrickson’s love for horses began in childhood and never faded. In 1946, after moving to Granger around 1946, Bud married local girl Louvina Bawden, daughter of Mr & Mrs O.R. Bawden.
The couple raised seven children, instilling in them the same values of hard work and community that guided their own lives. Bud worked as a welder and steel fabricator, but his heart was always with horses.
TWO LOCATIONS:
In the 1950s and early 1960s, he built and operated Hendrickson Horse Stables, first at 3396 W 4100 S and later at 2855 S 3600 W in Granger. His facilities offered boarding, training, and riding, and were a welcoming place for horse lovers across the Salt Lake Valley. Known as a capable handler and skilled rider, Bud often had horses for sale and could shoe them as well. He also helped countless scouts earn their Horsemanship Merit Badge, sharing his expertise with patience and enthusiasm.
Deeply involved in the community, Bud served on the Days of ’47 Rodeo Committee, was active in scouting and 4-H, and rode with the Magna Mountain Riders. He was a man who successfully turned his passion into a business, helping others learn to better care for their animals in a rapidly growing city. For Bud, training a horse was not just a skill—it was a lifelong love. When he passed away in 1999, he left behind a legacy of horsemanship, friendship, and dedication to the western way of life.
