Spud Adams: The Man Who Brought Wall to Wall Carpet to Granger
Born William “Spud” Adams on April 6, 1931, in Salt Lake City, Spud grew up with the same hardworking spirit he later brought to his business ventures. After attending the University of Utah — where he shined as a running back and track star — Spud turned his focus to business and community.
In about 1965, Spud opened one of Granger’s very first carpet stores — Country Carpets — at 1962 West 3500 South. At the time, most local homes still had traditional hardwood floors with an area rug in the center. Spud’s store arrived just as families began shifting to modern, wall-to-wall carpeting — think thick, colorful shag carpets that defined a whole era of home design.
Spud’s good business sense and dedication made Country Carpets an outstanding success. He built a reputation for quality products and friendly, dependable service — helping countless Granger families transform their homes with fresh, modern flooring.
Outside of work, Spud was just as passionate about life. He was an avid golfer, winning men’s club championships at Desert Hills Golf Club in Green Valley, Arizona, where he later moved and opened an indoor driving range. He loved yard work and was especially proud of his home-grown cabbages — which he’d share each St. Patrick’s Day with friends and family.
Spud Adams passed away on September 18, 2019, at the age of 88
