Alden Rupp: A Lifetime of Farming in Granger
Alden “Aldie” Rupp – A Well-Known Granger Farmer
Alden William “Aldie” Rupp (April 12, 1920 – June 19, 1998) was a respected farmer whose life reflected the strong agricultural traditions of the Granger community.
Born in Taylorsville, Utah, Alden was the son of Benjamin Rupp and Nettie Brown. He married the beautiful Velda Young and together they established their farm. Velda passed away in 1989, and Alden later married longtime resident, Irene Lehman Coon. A devoted member of his church, he was active in spiritual as well as civic duties. “Aldie” lived a life centered on faith, family, and hard work.
Farming was at the heart of Alden’s life. He spent decades working the land in Granger, Heber, and Tremonton, raising sugar beets, hay, and grain. In addition to farming, he worked for Salt Lake County Roads and Bridges for 24 years, serving as a Highway Supervisor. In his younger years, he also enjoyed playing baseball and was known as a catcher on local teams.
In 1958, Alden gained a bit of statewide recognition when he was featured in an advertisement for USS Nitrogen Fertilizer Company. The advertisement highlighted him as a successful Utah sugar beet farmer and shared his experience using nitrogen fertilizer on his crops. Alden explained that when he began using the product, his harvest increased significantly—from about 24 tons of sugar beets per acre to nearly 28 tons per acre. His success made him the face of the company’s campaign promoting improved crop yields.
Despite his farming accomplishments, Alden’s greatest joy was his family. He was the proud father and grandfather of a large and loving family, all of whom he treasured deeply.
Alden “Aldie” Rupp will long be remembered as one of the hardworking farmers on 3800 south with the long barn, who helped shape the agricultural heritage of the Granger community.
