Orin: A Lifetime of Hard Work and Quiet Dedication

From a young age, Orin was no stranger to hard work. As a boy, he herded cows, hunted sparrow eggs (worth five cents a dozen), hauled manure, cleaned local irrigation canals, and picked apples in Mr. Hemenway’s large orchard. He learned early on that every penny and every hour mattered.

After attending Granite High School for two years, Orin entered the workforce. He held jobs at Mr. Smith’s store and then at Utah Copper Company. He also worked on the Bawden family farm, overseeing not only their acreage but also an additional 200 acres of irrigated and dry farmland.

In time, Orin began splitting his days—working half the day at the local sugar factory and farming the other half. But with a growing family to support, he took on an even more grueling schedule: 16-hour days. For four years, he spent 8 hours a day on a neighbor’s hay farm, followed by 8 more hours working the Bawden land—every single day.

During the 1930s, when Utah Lake nearly dried up and farming became especially difficult, Orin adapted once again. He found work at the Utah Poultry Association, where he remained for 10 years. Later, he dedicated 13 years of service as a patrolman at Monroe School, quietly protecting and guiding the next generation.

Orin’s life was built on perseverance, service, and a deep sense of responsibility—leaving behind a legacy of grit and love for family and community

The students lovingly called him 'Grandpa'—a title he wore with quiet pride.
