Castleton’s – A Fashion Landmark Arrives at Valley Fair Mall
When Valley Fair Mall opened in 1970, one of its most striking new tenants was Castleton’s—already a respected name in Utah fashion retail. Known for anticipating national style trends and adapting them to local tastes, Castleton’s brought both elegance and innovation to the west side’s new shopping destination.
The Castleton’s story began in 1949, when W. Lowell Castleton opened the first store in Provo. Expansion came quickly: Foothill Village in 1957, Olympus Hills in 1961, and locations in downtown Salt Lake, Ogden, and a college shop back in Provo. Valley Fair Mall became home to the company’s seventh store, under the leadership of president and general manager Richard L. Castleton.
The Valley Fair Castleton’s was designed to impress. Its façade featured arched brick-edged windows and ornate wrought-iron gates. Inside, shoppers found thoughtfully designed departments— from the Young Elite Shop with stylish dresses, knits, suits, and coats, to the Junior Gallery for trend-conscious teens. Sportswear, accessories, lingerie, and a shoe salon rounded out the women’s offerings. Men weren’t forgotten: the “Gear for Guys” shop and the main men’s department—anchored by a massive stone fireplace—offered name-brand suits, furnishings, and footwear.
Guided by a philosophy of fashion awareness, brand quality, and exceptional customer service, Castleton’s quickly became more than a store—it was a shopping experience. Don L. Smith, a University of Utah graduate, served as store manager, ensuring that each visit reflected the brand’s commitment to style and satisfaction.
For Valley Fair Mall visitors in the 1970-mid 1980’s, Castleton’s was a place where modern design met timeless elegance, helping define the mall’s reputation as a complete and fashionable retail destination.
