Glowing Through the Century: The Harmon Brothers and 20th Century Lites

The Harmon Brothers and the Glow of 20th Century Lites: A Legacy in Neon

For nearly seven decades, the streets and skylines of Utah were illuminated by the craftsmanship of two remarkable brothers—Floyd “Flip” Harmon and Robert “Bob” Harmon, proud co-owners of the long-running sign company 20th Century Lites. Together, these brothers left an indelible mark on the Wasatch Front, one glowing sign at a time.

The Harmon brothers inherited more than just a strong work ethic—they inherited the spirit of pioneers. Born into the well-known Harman/Harmon family, Flip (1925–1997) and Bob (1927–2018) carried forward their family's legacy of innovation and community betterment. In the mid-20th century, as cities across Utah were booming, Flip and Bob launched their sign company, 20th Century Lites, establishing it at 3715 South Redwood Road. Specializing in custom neon signage, the company quickly became a trusted name among local businesses, theaters, and restaurants looking to bring bright identity to their storefronts.

While Flip balanced his time between the sign shop and his extensive volunteer leadership with the Days of ’47 Committee, Bob remained the steady craftsman behind the scenes. His meticulous work and mastery of neon kept the business thriving long after many similar shops had faded. In fact, Bob Harmon worked in the neon trade well into his 90s, retiring just a few years before his passing at age 95 in 2018.

Together, the Harmon brothers built more than signs—they built a reputation for quality, honesty, and artistry that spanned generations. Whether bending glass tubing, wiring transformers, or sketching bold designs, Bob and Flip helped define the character of mid-century and late-century Utah. Their signs lit up diners, shops, car dealerships, and city corners—each one a small beacon of hometown pride.

The Harmon brothers’ business legacy, 20th Century Lites, stands as a glowing tribute not only to their skill and dedication but also to the enduring values of family, hard work, and craftsmanship.
