Echoes on the Air: The Story of KRGO Radio 1550 AM

KRGO Radio – Country Music on the West Side

KRGO first went on the air in April 1968, broadcasting at 1550 AM from a 10,000-watt transmitter located at 5065 West 2100 South in the Granger area. The station sat on an 8.9-acre property, complete with its radio tower and broadcast offices.

KRGO quickly became a favorite local country station, known for playing a mix of classic and modern country hits. Listeners could call the request and contest line at 299-3449, a number well remembered by fans who tuned in daily.

By 1982, the owners of KRGO were attempting to sell the property and relocate the tower, marketing the Granger site for office or warehouse development. While the AM signal eventually went silent at that location, KRGO’s country brand lived on—later appearing on the FM dial at 103.1 during the 1990s, continuing its tradition of serving Utah’s country music fans.

Today, the former KRGO site sits along the busy 201 Freeway frontage road, now home to a variety of thriving businesses spread across the nearly nine-acre property. Though the radio tower is long gone, the airwaves still seem to carry faint echoes of KRGO—Utah’s hometown country station that once filled the valley with twang, laughter, and the familiar voices of the west side.
