The Polar King: Cool Treats & Community Memories
Long before it became home to Shag-Rug-La, the building at 3528 W 3500 South served up burgers, footlongs, and frosty treats as Bob’s Polar King Drive-In. Locals remember pulling up for a delicious Polar Kingburger, a footlong hot dog, or a cool, refreshing snow cone — the perfect stop on a warm Granger afternoon.
A big draw was the Country Style Root Beer, famously served in customers’ own jugs to take home and share. And for an extra treat? Freezer Fresh Frozen Custard by the heavy quart kept families smiling all summer long.
After Polar King closed its windows, the spot didn’t stay empty for long — it later became Fiesta Si, adding new flavors and local color before Dewey and Arlene Whitehead turned it into the first home of Shag-Rug-La in 1968, rolling out carpet and drapes where Granger once lined up for root beer and snow cones.
