The Hutchinson Legacy: Feeding SLC, Granger & Hunter

A Family Tradition of Service: Hutchinsons Fine Foods No. 2 Opens in Karen Lee

In June 1964, the Hutchinson family expanded their trusted name in grocery service with the grand opening of Hutchinsons Fine Foods No. 2, located at 4122 South 4000 West in the heart of the Karen Lee residential neighborhood.

This new, 6,000-square-foot store—an Associated Grocers outlet—was more than a business venture. It was a reflection of family legacy, unity, and dedication to community service. At the helm was J. Marvell Hutchinson Sr., a native Utahn and graduate of Brigham Young University, who had built his reputation in the grocery trade since 1935. As a former president of the Utah Retail Grocers Association, he brought decades of experience, innovation, and integrity to the family enterprise.

Joining him in this next chapter were his sons:

  • John M. Hutchinson Jr., 29, a graduate of the University of Utah, took on the role of store manager, bringing fresh ideas and enthusiasm to daily operations.

  • Delbert M. Hutchinson, 25, a graduate of Westminster College, served as head of the meat department, using his skills to uphold the store’s standard of quality and service.

Together, this father-and-sons team embodied the values of hard work, education, and customer care. The $80,000 store was designed to meet the needs of the growing Granger community with modern convenience and a personal touch. Long before big-box chains dominated the landscape, Hutchinsons Fine Foods offered friendly service, trusted products, and a sense of neighborhood connection.

Later, J. Marvell Hutchinson Jr. would continue the family legacy by opening Store No. 3 at 6000 West 3500 South, extending the Hutchinson name even farther west to meet the needs of new neighborhoods.

This story is not only about a store—it’s about a family whose roots in Utah grocery service run deep. Through the decades, the Hutchinsons helped feed and support a growing community, one customer at a time.
