Pioneering Life West of the Jordan: The Taylor Family’s Early Days
The Taylors were among the very first families to settle west of the Jordan River, carving out their homestead alongside other early pioneers like the Butterfield, Williams, and Thomas McKay families. In those days, they crossed the river at its northern crossing and followed rough trails south to reach their land. During harsh winters, they often crossed the frozen river near their own farm and traveled into the city by way of the old State Road.
Life on this frontier was lonely and demanding, especially for the pioneer women. With few doctors nearby, they relied on each other in times of illness and hardship, caring for the sick and sharing what little they had. Despite the challenges, the Taylors were known for their warm hospitality, opening their home to neighbors and travelers alike — building a true sense of community on the wild western edge of the Salt Lake Valley
