Remembering Granger High’s Glen Weidauer

A special piece of early Granger High School history has come home.

Glen Sidney Weidauer, a standout member of Granger High’s early athletic teams, passed away on May 5, 2026, at the age of 83. Recently, his children generously donated several treasured pieces from their parents’ Granger High years, including Glen and his wife Audrey’s officer jackets and Glen’s autographed football from the 1960–1961 Granger High football team.

The football has a wonderful story of its own.

In the fall of 1960, Granger High’s school newspaper reported that Lancer co-captain Glen Weidauer had been given a new title—“Mr. Football.”

Glen was presented with the football used during the season at the “Mr. Football” dance held October 28, celebrating his election as Mr. Football for the 1960–1961 season. Granger's silver and red school colors decorated the walls, along with a sign proclaiming, “We’re Proud of You Team.” The Steadman Orchestra provided music as students danced and celebrated their team and their newly crowned Mr. Football.

More than 65 years later, that football still survives—covered with the signatures of Glen's teammates.

It represents only one chapter in an extraordinary high school athletic career. Glen was a nine-time varsity letterman at Granger High, competing in football, basketball, and baseball.

But Glen's life became much bigger than his accomplishments on the field.

He married his Granger sweetheart, Audrey Barnson, on April 27, 1962. Glen later served in the Army and National Guard and spent 33 years with Mountain Fuel as a designer, engineer, and serviceman. He was an outdoorsman, hunter, fisherman, golfer, water skier, champion trap shooter, and accomplished marksman. He could weld, build, repair, and seemingly fix just about anything.

Most importantly, his family remembers a kind and dependable man who would show up whenever someone needed him. He and Audrey raised two children, Stacey and Josh, and Glen became a devoted grandfather who rarely missed an opportunity to support his grandchildren and their activities.

Bringing a Piece of Granger History Home

The donation from the Weidauer family is especially meaningful because these aren't simply vintage Granger High items. They belonged to people who were there during the school's earliest years.

The officer jackets help tell the story of Glen and Audrey as young Granger High students. And the signed football can now be connected to a specific night in October 1960 when students gathered, music played, school colors covered the walls, and a young athlete named Glen Weidauer was honored by his classmates as “Mr. Football.”

Objects like these allow us to do something photographs and written histories alone cannot—they let future generations stand in front of an authentic piece of their community's story.

We are incredibly grateful to Stacey and Josh and the Weidauer family for recognizing the historical importance of their parents' belongings and choosing to preserve and share them.

Glen Weidauer left behind a remarkable legacy as an athlete, husband, father, grandfather, veteran, craftsman, outdoorsman, and friend.

And now, a little piece of Granger High's “Mr. Football” will remain part of Granger history for generations to come.
