Raised in Granger, Remembered Forever: The Life of Catherine Wallace

Catherine Solomon Wallace Vorwaller Hobson Smith (1900–1996)

Catherine was born in 1900 and grew up in the Granger community, where she spent her childhood helping with farm chores, riding horses along 3500 South, and learning the value of hard work. She became known as a lively, capable woman who embraced both the challenges and joys of her era.

She married George Wallace, and together they built a family. Their happiness was cut short when George passed away while their children were still very young, leaving Catherine a young widow. Despite this hardship, she remained strong and determined to provide for her family.

Catherine later married Carl Vorwaller, and together they had three children. After Carl’s passing, she married twice more—first to Mr. Hobson and then to Mr. Smith—each chapter of her life marked by resilience, change, and her continued devotion to her family.

In her later years, Catherine lived at 3775 West 4700 South in Granger (now West Valley City), where she spent 56 years of her life. That home became a gathering place filled with memories of family, neighbors, and the many stories that stitched together her long life.

Catherine lived to the remarkable age of 96 years, passing away in 1996. Her life reflected the story of many pioneer-descended women of the valley: a blend of endurance, adaptability, and quiet strength.
