Remembering 3775 West 4700 South: A Lost Home, A Lasting Memory

3775 West 4700 South – The Katherine Smith Home

The home at 3775 West 4700 South was a white, single-story shiplap house owned by Mrs. Katherine Smith, (Katherine Solomon, Wallace, Vorwaller, Howard Smith), who had lived there since 1922. Likely built near the turn of the 20th century, the house reflected the typical style and design of early West Valley homes, with modest architecture that was functional and enduring. Over the decades, it witnessed nearly a century of neighborhood life, family stories, and local change.

Unfortunately, the house was lost to the construction of the Bangerter Highway, along with many other homes in the area. While city records at the time noted that the house was “not historically significant” due to its common design, it remains a reminder of the countless personal histories and community roots that were displaced during the highway’s expansion. The home’s story underscores the transformation of West Valley City—from a patchwork of early 20th-century residences to a modern network of roads and development—and the importance of preserving memories of the homes and families that once shaped the area.
