32 Years of Faith & Healing: Mary Stillman Porter, Granger’s RS President and Midwife
Mary Elizabeth Stillman Porter: A Life of Service, Strength, and Kindness
Born in Utah in October 1858, Mary Elizabeth Stillman came into the world as the eldest of fourteen children — a role that would shape her life of quiet leadership, unwavering devotion, and service to others.
Mary married Moses Ross Porter, a hardworking homesteader and canal executive, and together they carved out a life on the plains of Granger, Utah. As they worked the land and built canals that brought vital water to the dry valley, Mary built something just as essential — a home filled with warmth, faith, and a steady commitment to community care.
Mary served faithfully as President of the Granger Ward Relief Society for thirty years, guiding and strengthening women and families through good times and hardship alike. Her capable hands and clear mind were trusted by everyone who knew her.
With a deep compassion for her neighbors, Mary studied under the respected Dr. Lizzie Shipp and earned her diploma in midwifery and basic medical care — a remarkable achievement for a pioneer woman of her time. She delivered countless babies and tended the sick throughout the Over Jordan community, often traveling long miles by buggy or sleigh, bringing comfort and courage wherever she went.
Those who knew Mary spoke of her exceptional common sense, gentle nature, and her rare gift of never speaking an unkind word. At her funeral, President Joseph F. Smith — who knew her family well since boyhood — paid heartfelt tribute to her character, praising her remarkable womanhood and tireless devotion to motherhood and service.
In 1914, Mary and Moses retired from ranching life and moved to Salt Lake City, where they continued to care for family and friends. Though they had no children of their own, they lovingly raised a nephew and a foster daughter as their own. extending their legacy of care to the next generation.
Mary Elizabeth Stillman Porter’s name still echoes in the history of Granger — a woman who wove faith, kindness, and uncommon wisdom into the fabric of her family and community.
