Gilbert Martinez: Granger’s Maestro of Music and Heart

Gilbert E. Martinez was our Music Man!

The Life and Legacy of Gilbert E. Martinez

In the heart of Granger, Utah, one man made music more than a pastime—it became a community heartbeat. Gilbert E. Martinez, founder of Granger Music Co., opened his beloved store in 1962 at 2696 West 3500 South, where he taught, inspired, and uplifted generations through music.

Born in Ouray, Colorado, and raised in Taos, New Mexico, Gilbert’s roots ran deep with rhythm. He was part of a family of musicians spanning seven generations, and by adulthood, he had mastered 17 instruments—many self-taught. His love for music followed him through his service in the U.S. Navy Band during World War II, his postwar work in railroads and construction, and eventually to Utah, where he opened what began as GEM Music Studio.

By 1968, his business had blossomed into Granger Music Co., a full-service store with rentals, instrument sales, and lessons taught by nine dedicated instructors. Gilbert’s talent was matched only by his warmth and optimism. He had a habit of starting each day by looking in the mirror and saying, “Good morning, champion”—a reflection of the hope and encouragement he offered to others.

Gilbert was not only a teacher and businessman; he was a pillar in both civic and musical organizations, including the Masons, Scottish Rite, Jesters, and Shriners in Salt Lake City and Las Vegas. His later years were spent in Las Vegas, where he served as band director for both the Las Vegas American Legion Concert Band and the Veterans Band of Nevada, continuing to bring music to life for others well into his 70s and 80s.

When he passed away in 2005 at the age of 81, Gilbert left behind a devoted wife of 59 years, three children, and countless former students and admirers. His life was a crescendo of service, skill, and sincerity—a melody that still echoes in the hearts of all who knew him.
