Honoring Gus Paulos: Businessman, Advocate, Citizen

Gus Paulos: Leadership Beyond the Dealership

Gus Paulos, President and CEO of Gus Paulos Chevrolet, was more than a successful car dealer—he was a respected community leader whose vision and compassion left a lasting mark on Utah.

Gus began his automotive career at just 14 years old, working as a janitor in his father and uncle’s dealership, the Paulos Auto Group. Over the years, he worked in nearly every role within the business, gaining firsthand knowledge of the industry before taking on leadership as President and CEO of Gus Paulos Chevrolet in 1980. Under his guidance, the dealership became one of the most respected in the region, known for both its customer service and its commitment to the community.

In 2004, Gus was named one of the top three community service leaders in the nation by Time Magazine in conjunction with the National Auto Dealers Association. He was honored with the Time Magazine Quality Dealer Award (TMQDA), the most prestigious award in the automotive industry, which recognizes not only sales performance but also exceptional service to the community.

For more than 20 years, Gus dedicated a significant portion of his dealership’s advertising budget—over 15% annually—to support an Anti-Drunk Driving Campaign. Partnering closely with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), his efforts raised awareness across Utah about the dangers of impaired driving, saving countless lives. His commitment earned him the Governor’s Exemplary Citizen Award in 1996, recognizing his life-saving impact.

Gus also supported many causes outside of his dealership. He received the Volunteers of America Outstanding Citizen Award (1997), the Make-A-Wish Foundation Award, and the 2002 Olympics Appreciation Award for his wide-ranging community efforts. In the automotive field, he was recognized with the GM Mark of Excellence Genuine Leader Award (2001), further cementing his reputation as both a business leader and a role model.

Though Gus passed away in 2006 after a courageous battle with cancer, his influence continues. His dealership not only provided vehicles to generations of Utahns but also embodied his belief that businesses should serve the greater good. Gus Paulos remains remembered not only for his success in the showroom but for his generosity, vision, and deep commitment to keeping his community safe.
