West Hammond: The Father Behind Utah’s Toy Dynasty
West Hammond: The Father of a Toy Legacy
West Hammond may not have imagined, in the early years of tending sheep in Moab or running a small-town mercantile, that his greatest legacy would be one of joy, imagination, and childhood wonder. But that's exactly what unfolded through the lives of his three sons—Gale, Marvin, and Herald—each of whom built careers that delighted generations of Utah children through the toy industry.
West’s life was one of entrepreneurial grit and reinvention. After Moab, he ventured into the poultry business in American Fork, then returned to retail by opening Hammond Confectionery on State Street in Salt Lake City. He later operated Family Variety at 13th South and 17th East. Whether selling sweets, dry goods, or household needs, West had a knack for understanding people—and a deep commitment to serving families.
His influence lived on most clearly in his work with his son Gale, the founder of Hammond Toys & Hobbies. West spent many years helping in the toy business, a natural continuation of his own journey in retail and community-centered service.
His sons took the foundation he laid and built something magical:
Gale Hammond created Hammond Toys, beginning with just $12 and a dream.
Marvin Hammond joined his brother in expanding Hammond Toys into malls and cities across Utah.
Herald Hammond launched Twirl Town Toys, another beloved destination for children and parents alike.
Together, the Hammond brothers became known as Utah’s toy family—but the heart of it all was West, whose example of hard work, adaptability, and love for family guided them.
