Dave Cracroft’s Hidden Mountain Masterpiece

A Hidden Mountain View Behind a Demolished Home

The mural’s artist, David Lorenzo “Dave” Cracroft (1940–2022) of West Valley City, was a talented local painter whose love for Utah’s beauty clearly showed through his artwork. Dave was known for creating beautiful paintings and earned awards for his artistic talents at the Utah State Fair. Inspired by the outdoors, he especially loved the mountains, the High Uintas, hunting, fishing, gardening, and Utah’s natural scenery — passions that often reflected in his artwork.

In 2002, Dave spent many days carefully transforming the massive concrete retaining wall behind the Scherzinger home into an extraordinary mountain landscape mural. Stretching across the backyard and rising approximately 12 feet high, the mural turned an ordinary cement barrier into a breathtaking work of art. Snow-capped peaks, evergreen forests, blue waters, and peaceful mountain scenes brought beauty and serenity back to a space where a treasured view had once existed.

After retiring from a 40-year career with the United States Postal Service in 2000, Dave continued doing what he loved — painting scenes that reflected the beauty of Utah. Today, the 4151 south Bluebird Drive mural stands as a remarkable reminder of his artistic gift, creativity, and appreciation for the landscapes that surround our valley.

“Can We ‘Retain’ the Retaining Wall?”

Could we preserve this masterpiece and use it for another project?
