From Fabric to Family: The Story of David’s Draperies

David and Rose Marie Colton – Drapery Pioneers of West Valley City

In 1952, David Sanford Colton and his wife Rose Marie “Rosie” Mangone Colton founded David’s Draperies in West Valley City. What began as a small family business grew into one of Utah’s most respected names in home furnishings. Located at 3555 South 3600 West, the business later became Colton Inc., merging with Gelfori Sales and Supplies while remaining under the family’s management.

David and Rosie built their business with dedication, artistry, and personal care. Their showroom offered custom draperies, carpets, blinds, vinyl flooring, lamps, and room accessories — even serving large institutional clients such as the LDS Church, for which they provided draperies and furnishings in chapels across the country. At its peak, the company employed a team of skilled seamstresses, decorators, and sales staff, making it one of the largest fabric stores and workrooms in the state.

David, born in Price, Utah in 1920, was a World War II veteran, a musician, and a lifelong Latter-day Saint who served missions in Rome, Italy and Washington, D.C. He was known for his warmth, leadership, and devotion to family and faith.

Rosie was the heart of both the family and the business — welcoming employees and customers alike with her kindness and vibrant spirit. Proud of her Italian heritage, she found her greatest joy in cooking hearty meals of meatballs and pasta for her loved ones, creating a home filled with love and laughter.

Together, David and Rosie Colton left a lasting legacy of hard work, faith, family, and community spirit — and their business at 3555 South 3600 West remains a memorable part of West Valley City’s commercial history.
