The Violet Spray Car Wash — Arnold Isbell’s Sparkling Success

Arnold Alton Isbell (1921–2010)

Businessman, Veteran, and Community Servant

Arnold Alton Isbell was born in Oklahoma in 1921, a man whose energy and warmth would later make him a familiar face in Utah’s west-side business community. Following his service in the U.S. Army during World War II, Arnold married Alma Grotepas on November 19, 1945, beginning a loving partnership that lasted throughout their lives.

Arnold’s entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly in the postwar years. Among his several business ventures was the Violet Spray Auto Wash, located at 4003 West 3500 South, across the street from Harmon City. When it opened in the mid-1960s, the new “Valley View Conoco – Violet Spray Auto Wash” was advertised as “the finest auto wash in the county.” The grand opening celebration reflected Arnold’s cheerful and generous nature—offering free popcorn, balloons, pony rides, cold drinks, and prizes, including aluminum strainers for the first 50 customers. Families flocked to enjoy the festivities, complete with a live clown and KCPX-TV bingo cards, making the event a memorable community moment.

Beyond his car wash, Arnold owned and operated several other local businesses over the years, and for a time worked as a Fuller Brush salesman, known for his friendly visits and reliable service.

A man of deep faith and kindness, Arnold was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving alongside his wife as a missionary in the South Dakota Indian Mission and later as a temple worker. He found joy in simple, meaningful things—working in his garden and sharing its harvest with neighbors and friends.

Arnold Alton Isbell passed away in 2010, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, good humor, and quiet service. His businesses, generosity, and bright personality helped shape the community spirit that West Valley residents still cherish today
