The ZCMI Talking Christmas Tree

The ZCMI Talking Christmas Tree was a beloved—and sometimes slightly spooky—Utah holiday tradition, especially during the 1970s and 1980s. At locations such as Valley Fair Mall, it became a memorable seasonal attraction for families.

The display featured a large, animated Christmas tree that appeared to interact with shoppers, speaking and responding as if it were alive. The effect was created with a hidden person inside the structure, using a microphone to give the tree its voice and personality.

For many children, the experience was both magical and surprising. The tree’s movement and “conversation” created moments of laughter, wide-eyed wonder, and just a hint of holiday mystery. For others, especially younger children, it could feel a little spooky—but in a way that only added to the excitement of the season.

At Valley Fair Mall, the talking Christmas tree became one of the most memorable holiday attractions, drawing families year after year and helping create lasting Christmas traditions in West Valley City.
