E.L. Kone and Edko Welding:

A Legacy in Automotive Repair and Veteran Training

Eddie La-Mone “E.L.” Kone (1915–1987) was a respected Salt Lake area businessman and a skilled automotive repair expert. In 1946, he founded EdKo Welding, located on State Street, in Murray and 3130 Redwood Rd establishing it as a premier destination for electric and acetylene welding, body and fender work, and automotive painting. Known for his honesty, high-quality workmanship, and reasonable prices, Kone earned the trust and loyalty of a broad customer base, including auto owners, manufacturers, and local farmers.

E.L. Kone’s commitment to his community extended beyond his business. In 1947, he partnered with the Veterans Administration and the Granite School District to offer specialized training classes for returning veterans. At EdKo Welding, Kone instructed veterans in welding, upholstery repair, glass repair, dent removal, and proper automotive painting techniques. His program prepared trainees to handle full journeyman-level work, helping them reintegrate into civilian life with valuable skills in high demand.

Kone’s dedication to precision, instruction, and service established EdKo Welding not just as a successful business, but as a center of professional development and community support. His impact on the automotive trade and local veterans’ education left a lasting legacy in the Salt Lake Valley.
