Estel L. Wright: The Man Who Built Granger’s Future
Estel L. Wright – A Builder of Community and Visionary Leader
Estel L. Wright (1893–1986) was one of the most influential figures in the development of Granger and the Westside area. A man of vision, determination, and service, Estel left a legacy that shaped the community’s growth for generations.
Born in Idaho and raised on a fruit farm in Oregon, Estel learned the values of hard work and perseverance from an early age. He came to Salt Lake City in 1919 and, just a few years later in 1923, joined the American Building and Loan Company, which later became American Savings and Loan. His career in finance flourished, and he eventually became chairman of the board, helping guide the institution during a period of rapid growth.
In 1940, Estel married Leah Mouritsen, a talented businesswoman who would later teach business at Granite High School and manage Wright Realty. Together, they moved to Granger in 1943, establishing roots in the community at their home on Marcus Road. They also owned property at 2727 West 3500 South, where Estel kept a garden, raised chickens, and generously shared the bounty of fresh corn and vegetables with his neighbors.
Estel’s professional contributions were wide-ranging. He became president of American Housing Corporation and Wright Realty, Inc., both of which were central in subdividing land and promoting new building throughout Granger. He also served as president of American Insurance and Investment Company and was a director with Research Industries Corporation.
Perhaps his most significant achievement came through his civic service. Recognizing the urgent need for modern infrastructure, Estel was instrumental in securing water and sewer services for Granger and Hunter. He served as a director of the Salt Lake County Conservancy District and as a trustee of the Granger-Hunter Improvement District, where he worked tirelessly to ensure that the growing population had safe, reliable utilities.
His leadership and contributions to the region were widely recognized. Estel received the Chamber of Commerce Service Award, a testament to the respect and gratitude he earned from his peers and the community.
Beyond business and civic leadership, Estel also served faithfully in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including as bishop of the Granger Ward. His dedication to both his faith and community left a lasting spiritual and civic imprint.
Together, Estel and Leah Wright became pillars of Granger, shaping its development, guiding its growth, and strengthening its people. Truly, “no man has been more instrumental in the growth of the Granger-Hunter area” than Estel L. Wright.
