Redwood Elementary School: 72 Years of Learning and Legacy
Redwood Elementary has stood as a beacon of education and community spirit since its construction began in 1953. Located at 2630 South Redwood Road, the school was part of a major expansion plan to serve the growing Granger and West Valley areas. With 10 classrooms, it was designed to provide modern, accessible education to the neighborhood's children.
In early 1954, preparations were made to furnish and outfit the new school. The district approved $32,900 for desks, chairs, tables, and essential classroom furniture — a major investment at the time. Additionally, two new school buses were purchased for $17,455 to help bring students safely to and from school.
Redwood Elementary was officially dedicated on March 9, 1954, though the full dedication program had yet to be finalized. Even in those early days, the excitement was clear: a new chapter in community education was beginning.
Over the next seven decades, Redwood Elementary would become more than just a building. It became a place of growth, friendship, learning, and lasting memories for thousands of students, teachers, and families. Generations passed through its halls — learning to read, to dream, to lead.
Now, in May 2025, Redwood Elementary will close its doors after 72 remarkable years. The closure, due to declining student enrollment, marks the end of an era. While the building may no longer serve as a school, its legacy will live on in the hearts and stories of those who were part of its journey.
As we say farewell, we honor the role Redwood Elementary played in shaping lives and strengthening our community — a true symbol of public education at its finest.
